As this policy is reviewed, please note the following State/Area for which exceptions exist:
Not Applicable
Specific details on each exception, if applicable, may be found within the General Information section of this text.
This policy deals with when to compensate non-exempt/overtime eligible employees who volunteer their time at various civic or charitable events.
Exempt employees are NOT paid additional compensation for time spent volunteering at civic or charitable events or Joyner Sponsored events.
Civic or Charitable Volunteer Events
On occasion, Joyner employees may volunteer their time for civic or charitable purposes.
To be a “volunteer,” non-exempt/overtime eligible employees must truly be offering their services and time freely, not because of a direct or implied expectation by Joyner to do so. A volunteer must not be acting under Joyner’s direction or control, and there must be no promise, expectation or receipt of compensation for the employee’s services and time.
Non-exempt/overtime eligible employees who freely volunteer their services and time to assist with a civic or charitable event are NOT paid for their volunteer time that falls outside their regular work hours.
Non-exempt/overtime eligible employees who would like to volunteer their services and time to assist with civic or charitable events during regular work hours must receive approval from management to do so. If an employee receives approval to volunteer his/her services and time during regular work hours, it is at management’s discretion to determine if the volunteer time that falls within regular work hours will be paid (without the employee having to use paid time off benefits), or if the employee will need to use Paid Time Off (PTO) or Community Service/Education Support (CSES) hours to participate as a volunteer at the civic or charitable event during regular work hours.
Note: If non-exempt/overtime eligible employees who freely offer their service and time to assist with civic or charitable events engage in Joyner marketing activities at the event, the employees will be paid for their time spent participating in the Joyner marketing activities. For example: providing brochures/handouts/marketing materials related to Joyner Transportation & Logistic Services and Products (even at civic/charitable events).
Joyner “Business Purpose” Volunteer Events A non-exempt/overtime eligible employee is paid for all hours actually worked at a volunteer event that is primarily for Joyner business purposes.
