USA Operations Centers Scheduling Flexibility May 2017
Flexibility is not just a policy or program. It is an environment that management should create to attract and retain a talented, diverse, and productive workforce.
From time to time, there are situations when an employee needs to temporarily adjust his or her work schedule to meet individual needs and responsibilities. One of the most important benefits an employer can offer employees is flexibility in the workday. If business needs can be met while accommodating an employee's request for flexibility, management has the ability to temporarily adjust the employee's daily/weekly work schedule.
Examples of work schedule flexibility include:
Changing starting and finishing times.
Changing lunch hours to accommodate individual needs
Making up missed time within the same week
Working from home or remotely for a short term/temporary time frame. (Not to be confused with a Telecommuter Arrangement.
For information regarding specific Flexible Work Arrangements such as U.S. Compressed Workweek, see the corresponding policies in this manual.
Work schedule flexibility does not include accommodating an employee who is ill or unable to work due to injury unless the arrangement is an accommodation under the ADA or the Pregnancy Accommodation policy. Employees who are ill or unable to work due to injury should use PTO or Short Term Disability. Please refer to the Paid Time Off and Short Term Disability policies for additional information.
Advantages of a flexible work environment:
Allows management and employees to work together to develop a win-win work arrangement.
May improve employee retention and recruitment.
Recognizes individuality within a diverse workforce.
May improve attendance and maintain/improve productivity since the employee has an opportunity to schedule personal appointments around the work schedule.
Enhances employee engagement.
