State/Area Exceptions

As this policy is reviewed, please note the following State/area for which exceptions exist:

Not Applicable

Specific details on each exception may be found within the General Information section of this text.

Overview

Medical examinations are:

Administered to verify fitness to return to work following illness/injury or to validate continued absence due to illness/injury in some cases.

Required to verify medical clearance for specific job classifications prior to hire or transfer into the job position for compliance with federal regulations. Examples include Department of Transportation drivers.

General Information

Time away from work for completion of required medical examinations scheduled by Safety & Insurance Services (S&I) is counted as time worked.

When circumstances warrant, S&I may require the employee to complete a medical examination. This may include:

Prior to an employee’s return to work following an illness/injury absence.

To verify the need for a continued absence due to an illness/injury.

If the absence is being managed by the third party Health Service Provider, then the decision to require a medical examination is made by Health Service Provider and approved by the Joyner Medical Director.

If the absence is being managed by S&I, then the decision to require a medical examination is made by the Joyner Medical Director.

Medical records are confidential, with access restricted to S&I and the employee.

Health Service Provider or S&I will provide management with general information necessary to determine the application of illness policies and staffing decisions.
