USA Operations Centers Fitness for Duty May 2017
Joyner is committed to maintaining a safe, healthy and productive workplace. Employees who are medically unfit to be in the workplace can affect the safety, health, and welfare of themselves and others.
Employees who may be experiencing a physical, mental and/or emotional health condition are encouraged to voluntarily seek assistance from a healthcare professional.
At times, an employee’s ability to meet his or her essential job functions may be impacted. Examples of possible fitness for duty situations might include one or more of the following:
A poorly controlled medical condition(s)
Alcohol and/or illegal drug use
Thoughts of self-harm and/or harm to others
This is not intended to be an all-inclusive list.
If an employee witnesses another employee’s comments and/or behaviors that may indicate any of the above, the employee should immediately notify management.
NOTE: If an employee’s condition appears serious and/or threatening to himself/herself or others, immediately contact local authorities (call 911) and then alert management.
Employees who appear unfit for work will be referred to Safety & Insurance (S&I)) for an evaluation. S&I and HREC may evaluate an employee in person, via Skype video or by telephone.
In some cases, Joyner HREC and S&I Director’s may recommend that an employee be placed off work and evaluated by the employee’s treating healthcare provider or an independent medical professional.
If an employee is referred for an external medical evaluation, the employee is required to sign an authorization allowing HREC & S&I to exchange information with the healthcare provider. The employee may also be required to submit medical documentation to S&I and HREC.
Failure to cooperate with any part of the process may jeopardize an employee's continued employment.
State and federal laws may require a "reasonable accommodation" in the workplace for an employee who is a qualified individual with a disability. If you need a workplace accommodation, contact Joyner’s Health Services Provider to submit an ADA accommodation request.
All situations involving fitness for duty are to be treated in confidence.
