General Information

Eligibility

Full time and part time benefit eligible employees are eligible for paid time away from work for Bereavement Leave.

Length of Leave

Employees will work with their supervisors to determine the appropriate length of the leave. If the requested length of the leave is greater than the guideline, the employee may take additional time by using Paid Time Off (PTO).

The guidelines for Bereavement Leave are:

Definitions

Immediate Family includes: Spouse, same sex/opposite sex domestic partner, parents, step-parents, parents-in-law, children, step-children, sibling/step-sibling/sibling-in-law, grandparents, grandchildren, foster parents, foster children, guardianship relationships, and spouses or domestic partners of the aforementioned.

Relative/Non-Family member includes: Family relationships not defined as immediate, close friends or co-workers.

Managers reserve the right to have employees provide proof of death and proof of relationship for time requested.

Pay

Compensation for Bereavement Leave is paid at an employee’s regular rate of pay, including shift premiums if applicable.

Bereavement Leave does not count as time worked and is not included for the purposes of calculating overtime.

Employee Actions

Bereavement Leave is requested through your supervisor.

Work with your supervisor to determine the appropriate length of leave.

Employees will request and record Bereavement Leave in the Time Management Tool.

Managerial Actions

The supervisor explains the Bereavement Leave policy to new and on-board employees.

The supervisor discusses Bereavement Leave request procedures with employees.

The supervisor must evaluate each request, determine if it qualifies, determine the appropriate length of leave within the guidelines and return a decision to the employee.

Human Resources staff should be familiar with the provisions of the policy in order to help leadership administer the Bereavement Leave policy in an accurate and consistent manner.
